Summary

A small, narrow rectangular enclosure with rounded corners at one end is visible as a cropmark on aerial imagery captured in 2006 and 2010. Although when first noted it was recorded as a possible long barrow this interpretation is now seen as unlikely. Its age and function are therefore uncertain. Its survival was confirmed by a geophysical survey undertaken in 2022/2023.

Map

A small rectangular enclosure, previously recorded under NHER 54929, is visible on Google Earth aerial imagery from 2006 and 2020. In 2010 it was suggested to be a possible Neolithic long barrow but this interpretation in now regarded as unlikely. Aligned roughly north-north-east to south-south-west it has rounded corners its northern end, with the earlier imagery (S1) also appearing it show it to have quite a rounded southern end. However, the more recent imagery (S2) – where the cropmarks are much more distinct – shows the enclosure to be shorter, with a fairly straight southern end. What had previously appeared to be the southern end of the enclosure now looks much more like unrelated cropmarks of likely natural origin.

October 2022-February 2023. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large potential development site.
This survey identified linear anomalies likely to represent the two ends of this enclosure but unfortunately it is clear that its central portion has been significantly disturbed by an east-to-west aligned modern service (which can also be seen on the later aerial imagery noted above).
See report (S3) and NHER 69650 for further details.
