Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 revealed little of potential archaeological interest. Although a number of linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches were identified, these all relate to former field boundaries shown on 19th-century maps. Subsequent limited trial trenching saw the investigation of one of these anomalies, with the corresponding ditch found to contain bottle glass of relatively recent date.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F264).
This survey identified a number of roughly east-to-west and north-to-south aligned ditches likely to represent infilled ditches, all of which correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Swanton Morley tithe map (S1).
The majority of the discrete anomalies recorded are thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology. Scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F264; Trench 284).
The single trench excavated at this location was positioned to coincide with an east-to-west aligned linear anomaly identified by the preceding geophysical survey in the western half of the site. The corresponding ditch was found to contained fragments of late post-medieval/modern bottle glass and a fragment of undated ceramic building material. No other features were encountered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2026.
