Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 revealed nothing of potential archaeological interest. Subsequent limited trenching recorded two ditches, one of which corresponded with a former field boundary shown on 19th-century maps. A broad undated feature was interpreted as another ditch.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F266).
This survey recorded little of potential archaeological interest. Two large areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the site correspond with ponds or water-infilled former quarry pits shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). The majority of the other discrete anomalies recorded are thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology. Scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F266; Trenches 285-286).
The two trenches excavated at this location revealed three linear features, including a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Swanton Morley tithe map (S2). An adjacent broad but relatively shallow feature was interpreted as a similarly-aligned ditch but this is not certain. Its fill contained a Mesolithic/Early Neolithic retouched flint blade. The third feature recorded was a north-west to south-east aligned ditch thought to be of relatively recent.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
