Full Description
May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F268).
This survey identified a 'T'-shaped group of adjoining north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies likely to represent ditches associated with a rectilinear enclosure and either an associated field boundary or part of a second enclosure. Although two ditches could be identified as potentially representing the western and southern sides of an enclosure its eastern side appeared to be potentially marked by a line of discrete anomalies. A number of other discrete anomalies in the vicinity of the ditches also potentially represent broadly contemporary pit-type features. The age of these remains is uncertain, although their orientation in relationship to the adjacent road would suggest they are most likely medieval to post-medieval in date.
Other discrete anomalies recorded across the remainder of the site are thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology. Areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the field and scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F268; Trenches 287-288 and 455).
Three trenches excavated at this location were primarily positioned to target the linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey. Two north-east to south-west aligned ditches were identified, one of which coincided with a linear anomaly thought to represent one side of an enclosure. The second was a narrower feature that had not been detected by the geophysical survey. One of the line of discrete anomalies that were potentially related to this enclosure was also investigated and found to correspond with a large pit. Two of the trenches coincided with an extensive north-west to south-east aligned linear anomaly extending from the corner of the probable enclosure, although only one revealed a corresponding ditch. Two undatable iron nails were unfortunately the only finds recovered from the excavated features.
Unstratified finds were limited to a blade-like flint flake of likely Mesolithic/Early Neolithic date and a number of undiagnostic prehistoric flint flakes.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
