Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 recorded two linear anomalies that both correspond with former field boundaries shown on 19th-century maps – one of which had also formed part of the Dereham/Swanton Morley parish boundary. The subsequent excavation of a single trial trench revealed no archaeologically-significant remains.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area 271).
This survey identified two linear anomalies, one aligned north-west to south-east and the other north-north-east to south-south-west, both of which correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). The former also coincides with the line of the Dereham/Swanton Morley parish boundary, which had been in this position since at least the 19th-century.
The majority of the discrete anomalies recorded are thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology. Areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the field and scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2026.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F271; Trenches 290).
A single trench excavated at in the western half of the site revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2026.
