Full Description
May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F273).
This survey identified two dispersed clusters of discrete and short linear anomalies in the central part of the site that potentially represent archaeologically-significant remains.
Two straight north-to-south aligned linear anomalies correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Hoe tithe map (S1).
An area of magnetic disturbance partially exposed at the edge of the surveyed area possibly represents an infilled pond or former quarry pit, although nothing of this nature is shown at this location on the available 19th-century maps.
The majority of the other discrete anomalies recorded are thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology. Areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the field and scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F273; Trenches 376-378).
Two trenches placed to coincide with the clusters of potentially archaeologically-significant geophysical anomalies identified by the preceding survey revealed a number of presumably related pits and ditches. A north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch produced five sherds of early medieval pottery and sherds of a similar age were also recovered from a nearby, similarly-aligned ditch and a pit in the adjacent trench. The other features were undated but potentially of a similar age.
A third trench excavated towards the eastern end of the site revealed no archaeological remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
