Full Description
July and August-September 2024. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new changing room facility.
Initial ground reduction exposed a small patch of flint nodules and yellow mortar interpreted as the remnants of some form of surface. It had clearly been much truncated by groundworks associated with modern landscape. The subsequent excavation of services trenches in this area revealed a potentially related chalk layer. The high position of these layers in the deposit sequence suggests they were almost certainly related to post-medieval or later activity taking place in the vicinity of Eccles Hall (NHER 10819). A number of finds were recovered from the underlying subsoil, including Late Saxon and post-medieval pottery sherds and post-medieval brick fragments.
See report (S1) for further details.
