Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2025 identified a number of linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches. A number clear correspond with former field boundaries shown on a late 19th-century map but several other display markedly different alignments and are likely to represent elements of an earlier system of land-division. These earlier features include one with a ninety turn that presumably former the corner of a field or enclosure. The majority of the other anomalies recorded were either of uncertain original or likely to be the result of relatively recent activity on the site.

Map

March 2025. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site:
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches, with at least two phases of activity probably represented. A number of fragmentary north-to-south and east-to-west aligned anomalies clearly correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). Two parallel north-east to south-west aligned responses are though likely to represent elements of an earlier field system. One turns through 90 degrees at its southern end, suggesting it potentially formed the corner of a field or enclosure. Two weak linear trends between these features may also represent archaeologically-significant remains, although these are regarded as being of uncertain origin and potentially associated with recent agricultural activity.
A large area of magnetic disturbance close to the southern edge of the site corresponds with a water-filled probable former quarry shown on (S1). Areas of magnetic disturbance adjacent to the modern and former field boundaries and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface, most likely recent debris.
See report (S2) for further details.
