Full Description
July 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The single trench excavated revealed a pit containing the remains of a turkey. The age of this animal burial is uncertain, although the cut of the pit itself was not visible in the subsoil layer, suggesting it was probably not particularly recent. The turkey bones show no signs of butchery, suggesting it had possibly been kept as a pet. All that can be said with confidence is that the feature must post-date the introduction of turkeys into Britain in the early 1500s.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
