Full Description
Unthank Road Flood Relief Tunnel. Tunnelling operations cut an infilled (presumed chalk working) tunnel.
The 'chalk working' tunnel was lined with brick at the sides. It did not cross the line of the Flood Relief Tunnel and thus the end of the working presumably clipped. Some twenty bricks removed of which fragments of two were observed by B. S. Ayers (NAU). Reasonably well-puddled, orange-red sandy machine-made brick of 18th or 19th century date with remnants of white mortar with chalk flecks and fragments. Soffit height of 'chalk working' tunnel was only a few centimetres different from that of the Flood Relief Tunnel. Soffit level 4.164m AOD i.e. at some depth as Earlham Road (75m south) is at 22.6m AOD and Dereham Road (200m north) is at 7.0m AOD.
Amazingly accurate NGR provided by engineer: 622281.956E, 308711.502N.
Observation plotted on map held in secondary file and by NAU.
See sketch plan (S1).
Staff fieldwork by B. S. Ayers (NAU) 6 July 1987.
