Map

The cropmark enclosure detailed below was previously recorded under NHER 32926.

1997.
[1] reports dowsing of 60m+ square 'building' cut diagonally by road, with 'internal division'.
OS aerial photograph shows north and west sides of a ditched enclosure of which there is no sign on (S1).
See photocopy in file.
Previously noted under NHER 32926.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 17 September 1997. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 14 March 2026.

Cropmarks of a sub-square rectilinear enclosure are clearly visible on undated (but recent) aerial imagery of this location (S2). It is bisected diagonally by the road, with its western and northern sides visible in the field to the north and its eastern and southern side in the land to the south. The enclosure is roughly square, measuring approximately 68m x 66m, with its slightly longer western and eastern sides aligned north-north-east to south-south-west. It is almost certainly the feature that had been noted in 1997. Its age is uncertain, although the fact it is bisected by a road that appears on Faden's map of 1797 (S3) shows it must be of some antiquity.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2026.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
Although the western side of the enclosure fell within the area examined no associated anomalies were identified. It should though be noted that the survey also failed to identify any trace of a former post-medieval field boundary that bisected the enclosure and is also associated with a clear cropmark.
See NHER 66170 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2026.
