Summary

A geophysical survey of this site identified little of potential archaeological interest. Apart from two linear anomalies that correspond with former field boundaries shown on 19th-century maps the recorded responses were all either associated with modern activity or of uncertain origin.

Map

September 2024. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified little of potential archaeological interest.
The more notable responses include two linear anomalies that both correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). Two areas of positive enhancement in the centre of the field may relate to large pits but a particularly large area of enhancement in the southernmost part of the site almost certainly relates to the adjacent scrap yard. Areas of bipolar disturbance around the margins of the field could represent areas of burning or kilns but were most likely associated with modern features or structures. Similarly, various isolated dipolar spikes were probably the result of modern ferrous debris. A strong dipolar linear anomaly at the northern edge of the field likely relates to a modern service.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
