Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017/2018 identified a number of ditches, all of which correspond with former field boundaries shown on 19th-century maps. Two large discrete anomalies also coincide with former quarry pits shown on one of these maps. Subsequent trial trenching in 2020/2021 saw the investigation of several of these features but nothing else of interest was recorded.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F52).
This survey identified a range of linear and discrete responses, although these appear to be of limited archaeological interest. The linear anomalies display a variety of alignments but all appear to relate to former field boundaries shown on either the Reepham tithe map (S1) or the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S2). Two large areas of magnetic disturbance correspond with former quarry pits shown on the latter.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface, most likely modern debris. All the other discrete anomalies recorded are thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Areas F188 and F189; Trenches 548 and 549).
The two trenches excavated at this location revealed three ditches, all of which correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Reepham tithe map (S1). One of these features produced two small residual Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery sherds and a piece of post-medieval bottle glass.
The two probable quarry pits recorded by the preceding geophysical survey were also investigated, although only one corresponding feature was identified. This produced no dating evidence.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single piece of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 March 2026.
