Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 recorded nothing of potential archaeological interest. Subsequent limited trial trenching identified a ditch associated with a former field boundary shown on 19th-century map. A broad linear band of ashy material lay adjacent to this feature but the date and nature of this material was uncertain.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F179).
This survey recorded nothing of potential archaeological interest.
Scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface, most likely modern debris. The other anomalies recorded are all thought to be either of natural origin or the result of recent agricultural activity.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 March 2026.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F179; Trench 547).
The single trench excavated at this location uncovered an east-to-west aligned ditch that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Salle tithe map (S1). A broad linear band of dark, ashy material was recorded adjacent to this ditch. This material didn't appear to be associated with a cut and was of uncertain date and nature.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 March 2026.
