Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2022 recorded a number of scattered linear and discrete anomalies, although these were all regarded as being of undetermined origin. The most notable was an 'L'-shaped response that appears to correspond with one of a number of undated linear cropmarks previously identified at this location (see NHER 52386). Subsequent trial trenching identified a corresponding ditch, although this was undated. A number of other ditches and several discrete features were also recorded, although these also produced no dating evidence. One of the ditches was though related to a former field boundary shown on a 19th-century map and another similarly-aligned feature was potentially of a similar age.

April and September 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development site (Area 2).
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies, all of which are regarded as being of undetermined origin. The most notable of these is an 'L'-shaped anomaly that appears to coincide with a cropmark features visible on aerial photographs (part of a group of undated features recorded as NHER 52386). There was though no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the other cropmarks mapped at this location.
Various discrete anomalies and area of magnetic disturbance were also recorded, although these are mostly thought to be either natural in origin or associated with recent activity on the site. The only possible exceptions are two strong discrete anomalies in the south-east corner of the field that are also regarded as being of undermined origin.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 April 2026.

July-September 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site (Trenches 1-12 and 57-58).
The 14 trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of scattered ditches and several discrete features, the majority of which were undated.
The most notable of the ditches was a roughly east-to-west aligned feature at the northern end of the site that corresponds with both an 'L'-shaped geophysical anomaly and one of a number of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this location (all part of a group of undated features recorded as NHER 52386). None of the ditches produced any dating evidence, although a west-north-west to east-south-east aligned feature at the southern edge of the field is likely to correspond with a former field boundary shown at this location on the Taverham tithe map (S3). A similarly-aligned ditch at the northern edge of the site was potentially of a similar age.
Other features were limited to a shallow pit, a post-hole and a probable natural feature, all of which were encountered in a trench at the western edge of the site. None produced any finds.
See report (S4) for further details.
