Summary

A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a cable trench in 2018 recorded a series of post-medieval walls. These were primarily of flint cobble and mortar construction, although all incorporated some bricks. They were most likely associated with early garden features, with several potentially corresponding with boundaries shown on a plan of 1741. The southernmost wall was though possibly somewhat earlier than the others. A small assemblage of unstratified medieval and post-medieval finds was recovered during this work, including a glazed pantile fragment.

Map

February-March 2018. Watching Brief.
Maintained during excavation of trench for new fibre optic cable between Felbrigg Hall and the junction of Park Road and The Street, Aylmerton.
The footings of five post-medieval walls were exposed at this location, two of which were aligned roughly west-north-west to east-south and the remainder north-north-west to south-south-east. These footings were primarily of flint cobble and mortar construction, although all also incorporated some brick fragments. Bricks from one of the two southernmost walls are of possible 16th-century date and this was also associated with an early type of mortar not seen in the other walls. This wall was therefore possibly built around the same time as the hall itself. Three of the four walls to the north appear to have potentially corresponded with garden features shown on a plan of 1741 and bricks recovered from the forth, northernmost wall were identified as being of 18th-century or later date.
A small assemblage of unstratified finds was recovered from wall demolition deposits and soil contexts along this section of the cable trench, comprising a post-medieval glazed pantile fragment, a post-medieval glass vessel fragment and a number of iron objects, including a medieval horseshoe and possible window fitting; a post-medieval stud, incomplete scissor arm and hinge pivot and an undated unidentified object.
