Summary

Field boundaries and at least one possible trackway, all of unknown date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial imagery of this site. They appear to represent more than one phase of activity and may date from the Iron Age to Roman period, as they appear very similar to early co-axial field systems identified elsewhere in this part of Norfolk (see for example NHER 6096, 21271 and 49400). These also coincide with a concentration of Roman finds thought to indicate the presence of a Roman settlement (NHER 41010, under which these cropmarks were previously recorded). Geophysical surveys undertaken in 2019 and 2021 recorded linear anomalies likely to relate to a number of the cropmark features, along with probable ditches and a possible enclosure that probably represent additional, previously unrecorded elements of the same field system (see NHER 66565).

Map

March 2009. Aerial Imagery Interpretation.
A series of linear cropmarks, representing field boundaries and possibly a trackway, are visible on 2006 aerial imagery (S1), centred on TG 4378 1111. More than one phase of activity appears to be represented, but the elements of the site which have a north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west orientation are of probable Iron Age to Roman date, particular as they coincide with a concentration of artefactual material though to indicate the presence of a Roman-period settlement (NHER 41010). These features may also be related to the land division recorded as NHER 13011 to the north-west. A possible trackway which appears to belong to this postulated phase of activity may lead towards the settlement and appears to be a continuation of that visible to the north west. These linear cropmarks appear to continue into the fields to the south and east and are likely to represent part of an extensive landscape of Late Iron Age/Roman activity in this area.
Previously recorded under NHER 41010.
E. Bales (NLA), 10 March 2009. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 3 May 2026.

Elements of this field system visible on the 2006 imagery in the northern half of the narrow field centred at TG 4442 1093 are also clearly visible on more recent imagery from 2019 (S3).
It should be noted that on both sets of imagery cropmark formation in this area is patchy due to differential cropping regimes and what appear to be variations in the underlying geology. The recorded cropmarks therefore almost certainly only represent a proportion of the remains present (as demonstrated by the results of the 2019 geophysical survey - see below).
P. Watkins (HES), 3 May 2026.

October 2019. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of an area centred at TG 4399 1121.
This survey identified a number of north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east aligned linear anomalies likely to represent ditches forming a sub-square enclosure and at least one associated trackway. These remains are almost certainly contemporary with the cropmarks in this group, the geophysical anomalies serving to fill in a gap that exists largely due to the cropping regimes at this location when the relevant images were captured.
See report (S2) and NHER 66565 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 May 2026.

October 2021. Geophysical Survey.
This survey of a block immediately to the south of the area examined in 2019 recorded a number of additional north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east aligned linear anomalies, the majority of which correspond with cropmarks in this group. These also clearly represented a continuation of the remains identified by the 2019 survey.
See report (S2) and NHER 66565 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 May 2026.
