Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2016 revealed three ditches and a pit, none of which were convincingly dated. There was though artefactual evidence for at least limited early activity at this location, with which some of these features were potentially associated. The finds recovered included several Late Prehistoric pottery sherds, which were recovered from the pit and one of the ditches. Small amounts of Roman pottery were found in the other two ditches, although one also produced a single medieval sherd.

Map

October 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of proposed development site (Trenches 1-6).
The six trenches excavated at this location revealed three ditches and a single pit. None were convincingly dated, although the finds recovered do provide evidence for at least limited prehistoric and Roman-period activity.
The pit was a shallow, sub-circular feature that lay in apparent isolation towards the western end of the site. It was found to contain two small handmade Late Prehistoric pottery sherds (tentatively identified as Late Bronze Age) and a small amount of animal bone, while a sample of its fill producing charcoal and unidentifiable charred cereal grains.
The three ditches lay in close proximity at the eastern end of the site and were all aligned roughly north-north-east to south-south-west. The easternmost produced a single sherd of Late Prehistoric pottery (similar to those within the pit), while the other two features both contained small amount of Roman pottery. One of the later did though also produce a single medieval sherd, suggesting at least some of the earlier material was potentially residual. Other finds from these ditches included a prehistoric flint flake, two fragments of unspecified 'ceramic building material', fragments of animal bone and oyster and mussel shells. Samples taken from their fills produced charcoal and a small number of carbonised wheat grains.
