Full Description
June 2009. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology (ACL/09/4).
This test pit was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.9m. There was little evidence for activity prior to the 19th century, with the 36 pottery sherds recovered all of late post-medieval/modern date.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include a possible prehistoric worked flint, 2 post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stem fragments, fragments of vessel, bottle and window glass, a curved tile fragment, a piece of possible ceramic building material with slag adhering, 26 iron nails, 2 metal handles, a door hook, 2 screws, a piece of metal wire with a hook on one end, 10 pieces of scrap iron, several large strips of metal, a piece of iron slag, 7 cockle shells and 2 pieces of animal bone.
It is also noted that the upper contexts of the test pit contained a large amount of brick rubble
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2). See also local press article (S3).
