Summary

In 2010 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. This test pit produced a small number of Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds. The bulk of the pottery recovered is though of late post-medieval/modern date and it is likely that the majority of the other objects recovered were of a similarly recent age. Potential exceptions include several possible prehistoric worked flint flakes and a small amount of iron slag.

Map

July 2010. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/10/01) was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.7m.
Finds recovered include:
1 Roman pottery sherd.
2 medieval pottery sherds.
3 post-medieval pottery sherds and 2 clay tobacco pipe stem fragments.
12 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 3 possible prehistoric worked flint flakes, 3 burnt stones, 20 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, a flat tile fragment, a slate fragment, 4 pieces of bottle/container glass, a flat metal disc, an iron nail, 2 corroded iron scraps, 4 pieces of possible iron slag and 2 oyster shells.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2).
