Summary

In 2011 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. Finds recovered included possible prehistoric worked flints, medieval, late medieval/early post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds and post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments. The pottery recovered suggests the site was occupied from the 16th century onwards, with the range of 17th-century wares indicating the inhabitants at this time were probably wealthier than average. The bulk of the pottery recovered was though late post-medieval/modern and it is likely that the majority of the other objects found were of a similarly recent date, including numerous fragments of ceramic building material.

Map

July 2011. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/11/2) was located at [1] and did not reach natural geological deposits – excavation being halted at a depth of 1.00m due to time constraints. Finds recovered included:
1 medieval pottery sherd.
9 late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherds.
49 post-medieval pottery sherds and 31 clay tobacco pipe fragments.
135 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds and a British Red Cross Society brooch.
It is noted that the range of 17th-century wares suggests the occupants of the site at this time were wealthier than average.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 3 possible prehistoric worked flint flakes, 2 burnt stones, 2 curved tile fragments, 12 flat tile fragments, 3 glazed tile fragments, a brick fragment, 174 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, part of a possible clay figurine, 26 slate fragments, numerous pieces of glass, a hinge, 33 iron nails, 10 iron bolts, an iron ?horseshoe, 25 corroded iron scraps, 5 corroded iron lumps, a piece of twisted lead waste and 6 oyster shells.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2).
