Summary

In 2013 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. Finds included small amounts of Roman, medieval, late medieval/early post-medieval and post-medieval pottery, post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments and a single piece of undatable possible iron slag. The bulk of the pottery recovered was though late post-medieval/modern and it is likely that the majority of the other objects recovered were of a similarly recent date, including various ceramic building material fragments.

Map

April 2013. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/13/8) was located at [1] and did not reach natural geological deposits – excavation being halted at a depth of 0.50m due to time constraints. Finds recovered included:
3 Roman pottery sherds.
1 medieval pottery sherd.
1 late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherd.
26 post-medieval pottery sherds and 17 clay tobacco pipe fragments.
80 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 5 flat tile fragments, 4 glazed flat tile fragments, 3 black-glazed possible tile fragments, 20 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, a slate fragment, various bottle, vessel and probable window glass fragments, a piece of wire, a bullet casing, 4 unidentified metal objects, 12 iron nails, 5 corroded iron lumps and a piece of possible iron slag.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2).
