Summary

In 2014 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. This produced little of interest, finds being limited to late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds, a post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stem fragment, a single piece of possible iron slag and various other objects of likely recent date, including unidentified ceramic building material fragments.

Map

March 2014. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/14/4) was located at [1] and did not reach natural geological deposits – excavation being halted at a depth of 0.50m due to time constraints. Finds recovered included:
1 post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stem.
13 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include a black-glazed flat tile fragment, 9 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, pieces of bottle, vessel and probable window glass, a large piece of flint with mortar adhering, a piece of slate, a piece of wire, a possible bracket, 2 iron nails, 4 corroded iron scraps, 5 corroded iron lumps, and a piece of possible iron slag.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2).
