Summary

In 2014 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. Finds recovered included post-medieval pottery sherds and clay tobacco pipe fragments, a significant quantity of late post-medieval/modern pottery and two undated worked bone objects (both possibly handles).

Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/14/7) was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.7m.
Finds recovered include:
9 post-medieval pottery sherds and 34 clay tobacco pipe fragments.
224 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a number of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, most, if not all, of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 4 flat tile fragments, 2 curved tile fragments, 43 unidentified ceramic building fragments, 2 slate fragments, a possible slate pencil, pieces of bottle, vessel and probable window glass, various unidentified metal objects, a metal bucket handle, 35 iron nails, an iron bolt, 5 pieces of corroded iron scrap, 3 pieces of probable iron slag, 13 oyster shells and 2 worked bone ?handles.
