Summary

Archaeological work at this location between 2017 and 2021 has recorded little of interest. An initial geological survey of the main portion of the site in 2017/2018 identified linear and discrete anomalies that correspond with former field boundaries and ponds shown on 19th-century maps. A geophysical survey of a smaller area in the south-east part of the site in 2020/2021 recorded two additional linear anomalies but subsequent limited trial trenching demonstrated that neither was associated with sub-surface archaeological remains.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F22).
This survey of a substantial portion of the site identified little of potential archaeological interest. The more notable responses included adjoining north-north-west to south-south-east and east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear features, both of which correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Hoe Tithe map (S1). Other linear anomalies are likely to be associated with field drains.
Two extensive areas of magnetic disturbance in the vicinity of these features coincide with ponds shown on both the Tithe map and the subsequent Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S2). Various smaller discrete anomalies are probably the result of variations in the underlying geology, while scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F275).
This survey of a small rectangular block in the south-east corner of the site revealed two linear anomalies that potentially represent infilled ditches, one aligned north-north-west to south-south-east and the other roughly east to west.
As with the preceding survey the various discrete anomalies recorded are not thought to be archaeological in origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F275; Trenches 379 and 380).
The easternmost of the two trenches excavated at this location was placed to investigate the two linear anomalies recorded by the 2020/2021 geophysical survey, neither of which was found to be associated with sub-surface remains. The western trench encountered a ditch that had been identified by the 2017/2018 geophysical survey and clearly related to a former field boundary shown on 19th-century maps. No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
