Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2017 and 2021 has revealed little in the way of significant remains. Although initial geophysical surveys recorded two linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches these both correspond with former field boundaries shown on 19th-century maps, while a large area of magnetic disturbance marks the site of an infilled pond shown on one of these maps. Subsequent limited trial trenching recorded a single ditch that produced no dating evidence but which was potentially associated with a former road of likely medieval to post-medieval date (traces of which are also visible as cropmarks and earthworks - see NHER 50699).

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F20).
This survey of a block at the eastern end of the site identified little of potentially archaeological interest. The more notable responses included an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Hoe Tithe map (S1), while a large area of magnetic disturbance at TF 9936 1533 corresponds with an infilled pond shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S2). Various smaller discrete anomalies are probably the result of variations in the underlying geology, while scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F278).
This survey of a strip to the west of the previously examined area also recorded little of potential archaeological interest. The only response of note is a north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Hoe tithe map (S1). A series of parallel linear responses to one side of this infilled ditch are almost certainly the result of relatively recent agricultural activity.
A large irregular discrete anomaly at the western end of the site is thought to represent an area of former quarrying.
As with the preceding survey the various other discrete anomalies recorded are unlikely to be archaeological in origin.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the line of a former road that crossed the westernmost part of the site, the traces of which are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs of the field and as low earthworks on visualised lidar data (NHER 50699).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F278; Trenches 292-294).
Three trenches were excavated at this location, the westernmost of which was placed to coincide with the line of the former road shown on Faden's map of 1797 (S3), which is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and as low earthworks on visualised lidar data (NHER 50699). This revealed a potentially related ditch with a similar north-west to south-east alignment immediately to the west of mapped cropmarks. No dating evidence was recovered.
The two other trenches revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single medieval pottery sherd.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2026.
