Full Description
May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F281).
This survey identified two linear anomalies, the westernmost of which is aligned north-north-west to south-south-east and coincides with a former field boundary shown on the Hoe Tithe map (S1). The easternmost anomaly is aligned north-north-east to south-south-west and potentially associated with a much earlier phase of activity - its orientation being markedly different to those of the both the adjacent Holt Road and the field system depicted on 19th-century maps. It may have been contemporary with a similarly-aligned square or rectangular enclosure recorded in the field to the east (NHER 66056).
Various small discrete anomalies are likely the result of variations in the underlying geology, while areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the field and scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F281; Trenches 297 and 298).
The trenches excavated at this location were placed to coincide with the two linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey. An undated ditch was recorded close to the line of the easternmost anomaly, although its orientation was different - the excavated feature being aligned more north-east to south-west. The western anomaly was found to be associated with two similarly-aligned ditches. These also produced no dating evidence, although, as noted above, they coincide with the line of a former field boundary shown on the Hoe Tithe map (S1).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
