Summary

A group of linear cropmarks likely to represent infilled field boundaries ditches are visible on aerial photographs of this location. At least one corresponds with a field boundary shown on 19th-century maps and the archaeological significance of the others is somewhat questionable - geophysical surveys and trial trenching at this location having failed to identify any associated sub-surface remains.

Map

June 2017. Aerial Imagery Interpretation.
Assessment of aerial imagery along proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
Group of fragmentary linear cropmarks displaying a variety of alignments. Recorded simply as 'field system'. One clearly corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2026.

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This survey identified a linear anomaly associated with the cropmark that can be seen to coincide with a former field boundaries on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). Two of the similarly-aligned cropmarks to the east were also associated with linear anomalies but these are thought to represent field drains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 May 2026.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
The three trenches excavated at this location were placed to coincide with six of the cropmarks in this group, the majority of which were found to have no associated sub-surface remains. The one exception was the north-north-east to south-south-west aligned cropmarks that can be seen to coincide with a former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). The corresponding ditch produced no dating evidence.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2026.
