Summary

Geophysical surveys and limited trial trenching at this site between 2017 and 2021 recorded little of archaeological interest – the only feature identified being a ditch associated with a former field boundary depicted on a late 19th-century map.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F16).
This survey of a large portion of the site revealed little of potential archaeological interest.
Although a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomaly is likely to represent an infilled ditch this clear corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). Four similarly-aligned linear responses to the east probably represent field drains – two of which appear to coincide with fragmentary linear cropmarks visible on aerial photographs (part of a group of possible field boundaries recorded as NHER 66062).
Various small discrete anomalies are thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology, while areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the field and scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F290).
This survey of a small triangular block immediately south of the area examined in 2017/2018 recorded nothing of archaeological interest - the only response of note being a continuation of the former field boundary ditch identified by the earlier survey.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 May 2026.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F290; Trenches 172 and 434-435).
The three trenches excavated at this location were placed to coincide with six of the linear cropmarks noted on aerial photographs of this location (all part of a group of fragmentary possible field boundaries recorded as NHER 66062). In the majority of cases no surviving sub-surface remains were identified. The one exception was the north-north-east to south-south-west aligned feature which had also been identified by the preceding geophysical survey and can be seen to coincide with a former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). The corresponding ditch produced no dating evidence.
Deposition of alluvium and peat were recorded in the easternmost trench and peat was also encountered in the westernmost trench.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2026.
