NHER 66084 (Monument record) - Undated ditches

Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F319).
This survey identified three linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches. These include a north-to-south aligned response the coincides with the eastern side of a small rectilinear enclosure visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (NHER 68218). A slightly more north-north-west to south-south-east aligned probable ditch to the west potentially represents the western side of the enclosure, although this is also coincident with a similarly-aligned former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1) at virtually the same location. A north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomaly to the east almost certainly represents a former field boundary ditch, although its date is uncertain.
The majority of the small discrete anomalies recorded are probably natural in origin, while scattered discrete dipolar 'spikes' were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface - most likely modern debris.

Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F319; Trenches 318 and 319).
The two trenches excavated were positioned to coincide with the two north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomalies recorded by the preceding geophysical survey. Both revealed corresponding ditches but unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. Although the westernmost feature was potentially associated with the western side of a cropmark enclosure recorded at this location (NHER 68218) it was most likely related to a similarly-aligned former field boundary shown at virtually the same location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1).
