Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2020 revealed two ditches. Although finds were limited to a single brick fragment of late medieval/early post-medieval date these features can be seen to correspond with linear cropmarks that are part of an extensive group thought to represent medieval to post-medieval field boundaries (NHER 44893).

Map

December 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Two ditches were recorded – a north-west to south-east aligned feature seen in four of the seven trenches excavated and a perpendicular north-east to south-west aligned feature to the north. The former produced a single brick fragment of 15th- to 16th-century or possibly slightly later date, which was the only find recovered. These ditches appear to have corresponded with two linear cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this field, both of which are part of a group of features thought to represent medieval to post-medieval field boundaries and trackways (NHER 44893). There was though no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a number of other recorded cropmarks, most of which are part of a dispersed group of undated probable ditches recorded as NHER 44964.
