NHER 69939 (Monument record) - Potentially medieval and post-medieval remains

Evaluation of proposed development site:
The two adjoining trenches excavated revealed structural remains of likely post-medieval date, along with a pit, three post-holes and a probable natural feature.
The structural remains comprised an 'L'-shaped arrangement of roughly hewn carstone slabs abutted to the south by a construction cut containing carstone rubble. The construction cut also contained post-medieval brick fragments and it is likely that these remains were associated with a building shown at this location on the Wormegay tithe map (S1). The age of this building is uncertain as it had been demolished by the time the Ordnance Survey First Edition map was produced in the 1880s (S2).
The pit lay beneath the carstone wall footings and produced a small amount of medieval pottery. The date of the post-holes is less certain, although they were potentially also associated with an earlier phase of activity, with one found to contain a single late medieval pottery sherd.
Unstratified finds recovered including a small number of medieval, post-medieval and late post-medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherds and a post-medieval floor brick/tile.
