NHER 69940 (Monument record) - Post-medieval ditches and undated pits

Magnetometer survey of site of proposed quarry extension.
This survey identified little of potential archaeological interest. Although an extensive north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear is likely to represent an infilled ditch this corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). Several other, shorter linear anomalies may also represent ditches, although it is noted that these may have been caused by field drains. Another linear response is potentially associated with a former watercourse.
There is no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a number of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this location, including a small possible ring-ditch at TF 6344 1133 (NHER 50950), fragmentary probable multi-period ditches in the southernmost part of the site (NHER 17786) and fragmentary undated probable ditches at its northern end (NHER 50952)

Evaluation of site of proposed quarry extension.
The 60 trenches recorded revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with only three ditches and five scattered pits recorded.
An extensive north-north-east to south-south-west aligned ditch seen in four of the trenches had been identified by the preceding geophysical survey and corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). It contained late post-medieval brick and pantile fragments. A perpendicular west-north-west to east-south-east aligned ditch to the east corresponds with another boundary shown on the same map. This produced a single post-medieval pottery sherd and a brick of late medieval or post-medieval date that was heavily overfired at one end (suggesting it had potentially been a waster or part of a brick kiln). A similarly-aligned ditch at the western edge of the site produced no dating evidence but was probably also post-medieval in date.
The five pits were all fairly unremarkable, undated features.
There was again no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the various cropmarks previously recorded at this location, including the possible ring-ditch at TF 6344 1133 (NHER 50950) and the fragmentary possible ditches at the northern and southern ends of the site (part of groups recorded as NHER 50952 and NHER 17786 respectively).
