Full Description
October 2024. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (LP_021 and LP_022).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest. Although a number of linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches were identified, the majority correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the West Walton Tithe map (S1). These include two adjoining straight boundaries in the southern half of the site and two more sinuous east-to-west aligned boundaries at its northern end that potentially represent fossilised elements of an earlier field system. A small number of other linear anomalies are potentially associated with archaeologically-significant remains, including two relatively short, straight responses that may represent earlier field boundary ditches. A small 'U' shaped response can also be seen at TF 4905 1406, although this is potentially natural in origin as it appears to extend from a linear anomaly likely to represent a palaeochannel. A network of these sinuous palaeochannels is visible across the entire site, reflecting the former presence of tidal flats at this location.
The northernmost part of the site was obscured by magnetic disturbance associated with a modern service.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
