Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2024 identified nothing of obvious archaeological interest. Although several straight linear anomalies are likely to represent infilled ditches these all correspond with former field boundaries shown on a 19th-century map. A large discrete anomaly at the southern end of the site coincides with a former pond of late 19th-century or early 20th-century date.

Map

October 2024. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (LP_025 and LP_026).
This survey identified little of potential archaeological interest. Although several north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies are likely to represent infilled ditches these all correspond with former field boundaries shown on the West Walton Tithe map (S1). A large discrete anomaly at TF 4927 1366 corresponds with a pond depicted for the first time on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition map (S2).
A network of sinuous palaeochannels is also visible across the entire site, reflecting the former presence of tidal flats at this location.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
