NHER 69945 (Monument record) - Undated ditches

Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (LP_027).
This survey identified an adjoining pair of north-north-west to south-south-east and north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies at the eastern end of the site that are likely to represent infilled ditches. These appear to be unrelated to the field boundaries shown on the available 19th-century maps and may have been associated with the medieval moated site immediately to the south (NHER 2207). It is possible that these ditches bounded a low mound observed at this location during the Fenland Survey fieldwalking (see NHER 19860).
A large discrete anomaly at TF 4973 1409 corresponds with a pond shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1) while an extensive area of magnetic disturbance in the south-east corner of the site relates to a now demolished building depicted for the first time on early 20th-century Ordnance Survey maps. Debris associated with this structure had also been identified during the Fenland Survey fieldwalking.
Various sinuous linear anomalies are likely to represent infilled palaeochannels - reflecting the former presence of tidal flats at this location.
