Full Description
October 2024. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (LP_024).
The most notable responses are a series of parallel north-west to south-east aligned linear anomalies in the eastern central part of the site. Whether these represent archaeologically-significant remains is though uncertain as they have the appearance of nature features and there are several sinuous linear anomalies extending from them that probably represent palaeochannels. Their straight morphology does though suggest that they potentially represent features deliberately dug or at least modified as part of a system of water management – particularly given the presence of a medieval moated site approximately 250m to the south-east.
Three straight north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies are likely to represent infilled ditches, although two correspond with former field boundaries shown on the West Walton to Tithe map (S1) and the third was most likely also associated with the late post-medieval field system.
The entire site is covered by a network of sinuous linear anomalies likely to represent infilled palaeochannels - reflecting the former presence of tidal flats at this location.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
