Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2024/2025 recorded a series of linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches, although these were all probably related to the late post-medieval field system. Two short weak linear anomalies potentially represented earlier remains but subsequent limited trenching demonstrated that neither was associated with sub-surface remains. A large, undated probable extraction pit was recorded, along with two post-medieval field boundary ditches.

Map

April 2024-April 2025. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (Area 2).
This survey identified little of potential archaeological interest. Although a series of predominantly north-north-east to south-south-west and west-north-west to the east-south-east aligned linear anomalies are likely to represent infilled ditches, these mostly correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Tivetshall St Margeret Tithe map. An east-to-west aligned linear anomaly in the eastern half of the field also corresponds with a former boundary on this map and several other linear anomalies probably represent lost elements of a previous iteration of this late post-medieval field system. The only responses that potentially represent earlier remains are two short north-east to south-west aligned responses in the north-east part of the site, although these are both weak and regarded as being of undetermined origin.
Scattered dipolar 'spikes' were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

September-October 2024. Aerial Imagery Interpretation.
Examination of available aerial photographs and airborne laser scanning (lidar) data for site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (Area 1).
Nothing of potential archaeological or historical interest was noted at this location.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 August 2026.

May 2025. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential archaeological impact of proposed East Pye solar energy scheme.
See report (S1) for further details.

August-November 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (BESS; Trenches 2-5).
Two of the four trenches excavated at this location were placed to coincide with the pair of short linear anomalies recorded by the preceding geophysical survey. No corresponding sub-surface remains were identified, although one of the trenches did reveal a large pit. This undated feature is suggested as being a 'watering hole' but was most likely some form of the extraction pit. The two other trenches both revealed single ditches that corresponded with former field boundaries shown on the Tivetshall St Margeret Tithe map. No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
