Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2024/2025 identified a number of linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches, all of which correspond with former boundaries shown on 19th-century maps. A short curvilinear anomaly potentially represented an earlier feature but subsequent limited trial trenching failed to identify any associated sub-surface remains. A pit of unspecified date and two post-medieval ditches were the only features recorded.

Map

April 2024-April 2025. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (Area 83).
This survey identified little of potential archaeological interest. Although a series of predominantly north-north-west to south-south-east and west-south-west to the east-north-east aligned linear anomalies are likely to represent infilled ditches, these all correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Moulton St Michael Tithe map (S1). It is notable that the easternmost of two parallel north-north-west to south-south-east aligned boundaries is associated with considerable magnetic 'noise'.
The only other response of note is a short curvilinear anomaly at the western edge of the site, although this is weak and regarded as being of undetermined origin.
Scattered dipolar 'spikes' were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 August 2026.

September-October 2024. Aerial Imagery Interpretation.
Examination of available aerial photographs and airborne laser scanning (lidar) data for site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (Area 84).
Nothing of potential archaeological or historical interest was noted at this location.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 August 2026.

May 2025. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential archaeological impact of proposed East Pye solar energy scheme.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 August 2026.

August-November 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (Site 1A; Trenches 6 and 7).
One of the two trenches excavated at this location was placed to coincide with the short curvilinear geophysical anomaly at the western edge of the site. This was shown to have no associated sub-surface remains. The second trench was placed to coincide with two of the linear anomalies that correspond with boundaries shown on the Moulton St Michael Tithe map (S1), including the north-north-west to south-south-east aligned feature associated with considerable magnetic 'noise'. It is recorded that two ditches and a pit were uncovered but no further details are given.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
