Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2024/2025 recorded little of potential archaeological interest. Although a series of linear anomalies likely represented infilled ditches these all correspond with former field boundaries depicted on a 19th-century map. A cluster of short, weak linear anomalies potentially represented earlier features but were shown by subsequent limited trial trenching to have no associated sub-surface remains. The only features recorded were previously identified ditches associated with late post-medieval field boundaries.

Map

April 2024-April 2025. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (Area 85).
This survey identified little of potential archaeological interest. Although a series of north-north-west to south-south-east and east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear anomalies are likely to represent infilled ditches these all correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Moulton St Michael Tithe map (S1). A cluster of short north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east aligned linear anomalies in the north-east corner of the site may represent earlier remains but are all weak and regarded as being of undetermined origin.
Scattered dipolar 'spikes' were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 August 2026.

September-October 2024. Aerial Imagery Interpretation.
Examination of available aerial photographs and airborne laser scanning (lidar) data for site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (Area 86).
Nothing of potential archaeological or historical interest was noted at this location.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 August 2026.

May 2025. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential archaeological impact of proposed East Pye solar energy scheme.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 August 2026.

August-November 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm (Site 1B; Trenches 8-9 and 11).
The northernmost of the three trenches excavated at this location was placed to coincide with the cluster of short linear anomalies recorded by the preceding geophysical survey. No corresponding sub-surface remains were identified. The two other trenches were placed to coincide with linear anomalies shown to relate to former field boundaries on the Moulton St Michael Tithe map (S1). Several corresponding ditches were exposed, one of which produced a presumably residual late medieval pottery sherd.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 August 2026.
