Summary

Excavations revealed evidence of medieval industrial activity associated with textile production during the 13th-15th centuries. This included hearths, cess pits and a rectangular post structure covering a possible working area. Post medieval activity included a brick and flint lined pit with three arched openings, and one room of a brick tenement.

July-September 1988. Excavation.
Medieval:
Industrial activity associated with textile production during the 13th-15th centuries. Numerous pits, some over 3m deep.
Small scale hearths and copious amounts of burnt soil. Pits backfilled with cess. A rectangular post hole structure (7m x 3.5m) covered a possible work area. Small rectangular flint structure surviving 3 courses high with a well to the rear at the street frontage.
Post medieval:
Rectangular brick and flint ?cess pit (3.22m x 1.40m) with three arched openings through the thickness of the east wall.
One room of brick tenement (2.6m x 3.5m). Originally the building continued along the length of St Margaret's Alley.
