Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 1990 and 2025 recovered Mesolithic/Neolithic, Neolithic, Neolithic/Bronze Age, potentially Late Bronze Age and undiagnostic Late Prehistoric worked flints; Iron Age, potentially Roman, Early Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; undatable copper alloy metal-working debris and casting wasting; molten lead fragments; Late Iron Age, Roman, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons; a post-medieval token and a range of other, Middle Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include undated copper alloy unidentified objects and lead weight; a Middle Bronze Age hilt and blade fragment from rapier, dirk or dagger; a Late Bronze Age socketed axehead fragment and awl; a Late Iron Age/Roman baldric or sword-belt fitting; Roman brooches, a terret, furniture mount, fragment of probable toilet set object and copper alloy stud; a potentially Roman lead steelyard weight; numerous Early Saxon brooch fragments, sleeve clasps and a gusset plate; a Middle Saxon pin; a Middle/Late Saxon strap end and hooked tag; Late Saxon disc brooches, a strap end and bell; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories (including a post-medieval gold finger ring and elaborate silver brooch); medieval horse-harness pendants, a harness mount, furniture or harness mount, harness hook, mount, thimble, purse frame, sword chape, figurine of a saint, copper alloy seal matrix, copper alloy vessel fragment, lead weights, lead pot mend, and lead spindle whorl; a potentially medieval lead spindle whorl or weight; medieval/post-medieval thimbles, a ferrule, sword pommel, handle attachment stud from chafing dish or cupboard door handle, copper alloy vessel fragments and probable repairs, copper alloy ring, lead weights and a lead window came; post-medieval bells, harness mounts, knife fragments, purse fragments, mounts, coin weights, a spur, candlestick fragment, rotary key, copper alloy seal matrix, silver rumbler bell, silver probable ferrule, lead cloth seals, lead weight and a potentially post-medieval copper alloy weight. This is probably the site of an Early Saxon mixed-rite cemetery. The quantity and nature of the Early Saxon metalwork recovered is strongly indicative of an inhumation cemetery, which a localised scatter of Early Saxon pottery sherds with bone fragments suggests the presence of cremations of the same date.
