2 October 1991. Rear of No 2, Pales Green
Trench parallel with house, set back 1m east of east wall, about 0.6m wide, 1.35m deep.
Section showed that all was 'made up' ground with thick tip lines of dark charcoaly soil, suggesting pit(s) filling.
Many animal bones and oyster shells.
Forking in one area showed fills at least 0.2m deeper.
Pottery collected by [1]:
1 late medieval unglazed bowl rim
1 unglazed Grimston
2 glazed Grimston
All these are late medieval (or early post medieval) and include a broken but complete large base.
1 Late medieval Transitional
11 early post medieval stoneware
12 Glazed Red Earthenware sherds, including late post medieval
5 medieval roof tile fragments
1 early post medieval brick fragment
2 18th to 19th century glazed sherds
