Summary

A series of earthwork banks, ditches and pits, which most likely relate to medieval to post medieval settlement features, field boundaries, a probable hollow way and post medieval extractive pits, are visible on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features still survive.

Map

1994.
Two grass fields, west of Church Farm.
Western one has north-to-south linear depression and east to west bank, suggesting a hollow way or associated field boundary, possibly leading to derelict Woodgate Farm to north. Both features truncated by the present track and arable land to west. Substantial area of extraction pits in centre east of field suggests clay pits.
Eastern field has remnants of post medieval cottages, standing outbuilding and well, with boundary ditch on west as earthwork. 20th century desertion.

March 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A series of earthwork banks, ditches and pits, of a probable medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S9). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features still survive. The features most likely relate to medieval to post medieval settlement features including a possible medieval to post medieval building platform (centred at approximately TF 8887 1511), probable boundary banks and ditches, field boundaries and a probable hollow way. A large area of probable post medieval extractive pits (not mapped; centred at approximately TF 8892 1515) are also visible on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S9). It has been previously suggested (see above) that the pits may have related to clay extraction. The features recorded above in the eastern field have now been record separately as part of NHER 68212. The monument polygon has been amended to the extent of the features as visible on S7.
