Summary

A very rare example of a Second World War Norcon pillbox survives as an extant structure and has been recorded on the ground. This is one of five such structures now identified in Docking, which is one of only two places in the county where pillboxes of this type are known to have been erected (see NHERs 30778, 30779, 58229 and 65268 for details of the other Docking examples). Docking was a category ‘A’ nodal point during the war (NHER 69317), and various anti-invasion defences were constructed at strategic locations around the village. This particular pillbox stands within Docking Park (NHER 30502).

October 2012. Survey
C. Kolonko (HES) carried out a photographic survey of this WW2 pillbox. The Pillbox is aligned east to west with the entrance facing west. This would have allowed the pillbox to cover both the entrance to the hall and the field to the east. A number of original wooden brackets for shelves survive internally. These were affixed to the structure by a series of bolts which have been simply punched through the pillbox's 15cm thick walls.
The pillbox is in excellent condition.
C. Kolonko (HES), 22 October 2012.

This is one of five Norcon pillboxes now recorded in Docking. The others are located at TF 7671 368 (NHER 30779), TF 7677 3695 (NHER 57853), TF 7636 3701 (NHER 58229) and TF 7646 3709 (NHER 65268). These are a significant group, with Docking one of only two locations in the county where this type of structure is known to have been present (the other being a group of coastal defences in the vicinity of Kelling and Weybourne – see NHER 24185).
P. Watkins (HES), 10 January 2022.

September 2025. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The Second World War Norcon pillbox described above is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs taken in 2017 (S2). It is likely that it still survives. The grid reference for the site has been corrected from TF 7681 3684 to TF 7680 3684.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 8 September 2025.
