Full Description
Oval enclosure of land, western edge may follow an earlier feature.
Predates both New Buckenham castle and town (ie pre 1146). Had formerly been part of the Bishop's Manor of Eccles, and was transferred to D'Albini as part of the arrangements for the new castle. Remained subject to Eccles Manor but was used as Town Field of New Buckenham. Ditch remains in part as deep waterfilled hollow, but elsewhere has vanished.
Full description in file.

Earthworks as described above are visible on aerial photographs (S4-S5). It has not been mapped since it lies largely to the south of the current project area.

A section of low earthwork bank (centred at approximately TM 0987 8965), most likely relating to part of the medieval boundary of Haugh Ditch oval enclosure, is visible on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2021 (S6). The majority of the Haugh Ditch oval enclosure is solidified into the modern field boundaries. The section of bank at TM 0987 8965 follows the same alignment as the solidified sections of boundary bank but appears to have been removed prior to Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6" map (S7), as the feature is not recoded on the historic map. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2021) it is likely that the bank still survives as a low earthwork.
