Full Description
Former Corn Hall, built on site of market cross and sessions house (now recorded as NHER 67880).
February 1979. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description excerpt:
"1855. Former Corn Hall. Large brick building with stuccoed dressings. Parapet and heavy cornice on paired brackets. Band. Rounded corners with brick quoins. Situated on an island site. East front faced in roughcast; two storeys; five windows...central doorway; on each rounded corner a round-headed doorway with keyblock and semi-circular tracered fanlight and cornice on console brackets. Side elevations (north and south) project further with rounded corners of rusticated brickwork, and pair of large round-headed windows with keyblocks and with rectangular panels over; the north side has projecting pilastered doorway with entablature. Rear (west) elevation: rounded corners with rusticated brickwork; one storey; 1:3:1 bays, centre three project slightly, large round-headed windows with keyblocks and brick aprons and with rectangular panels over, continuous impost; rusticated plinth and band at floor level; this elevation obscured by iron fire escape."

Building does not appear to be of archaeological importance. It supported a Home Guard Lookout in World War Two.

It is said locally that there is a number painted on a bank nearby that refers to a tank trap, perhaps associated with this lookout.
