Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting as part of an archaeological watching brief recovered a large number of Roman finds. Late Iron Age to Roman pits, post holes and ditches were identified and excavated. A probable enclosure was recorded. The amount of finds recovered suggests this is a significant late Iron Age and Roman settlement site. The investigation was carried out as part of a large watching brief along the line of a water pipeline (NHER 3716).

Map

April-May 2002. Excavation.
Excavation of site on course of Anglian Water North Pickenham to West Bradenham Supply Main pipeline. This site was identified during monitoring of topsoil stripping along the route of the pipeline.
Revealed pits, postholes and ditches dating to the Iron Age to Roman transitional and Roman periods. One large ditch formed a right angled corner and probably represented an enclosure. A spread of flints, just 'outside' this ditch was possible from field clearance. A number of pits were interpreted as being located within the enclosure.
See assessment report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2). Final publication awaited.
See NHER 37106 for details of unstatified finds recovered along the rest of the pipeline during the watching brief.
