NHER 430 (Monument record) - Precinct of Whitefriars

This area was in the posession of the Whitefriars (Carmelites) during the medieval period. The lands making up this precinct were aquired piecemeal, through donation, bequests and purchases made by the friars. The earliest records concerning this area date back to 1256, and the latest mention of them refers to the distribution of lead from the roofs and bells in 1538, the same year when it recorded that they surrendered their houses and lands to the county and pleaded poverty. Very little of the priory buildings survive today, though excavation has recovered some evidence (NHER 234), and the remains of an undercroft (NHER 36)are preserved inside the Jarrold Printers building, and are currently used to house their printing museum.
