2 December 1999. Field observation.
Tomb chest to southwest of church dismantled prior to restoration. Below a massive plinth of limestone a very flat surface of apparently natural boulder clay, at 200mm from surface. Sides of the hole left after the removal of monument showed that above the clay lay 200mm of topsoil and turf. A test hole dug to a depth of 450mm from surface suggested that the clay was natural and not redeposited over a burial. The base of a concrete foundation for the restored monument will be set at a shallower depth.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 3 December 1999.
